Engineering Day

IEEE Engineering Day is an yearly event promoted by IEEE Portugal.

We bring brilliant engineers joining Academia and Industry to present and discuss relevant topics for the technological community. This year, we will have 2 thematic panels of Sensors and Logistics.

Sensors Session

The Future of Smart Sensors as Enabler Technology for Digitalization

Smart sensors are increasingly gaining importance and represent one of the main enablers for several actual developments related to digitalization in different high sensitive fields, such as smarts cities, the fourth generation of industry, smart medicine, precision farming, environmental applications and internet of things. This involves the need for development of completely intelligent solutions for sensing, signal processing and signal transmission. The development in the field of sensors resulting mainly from technological advancements, market-economical aspects, and the needs for digitalization let us observe significant trends, not only toward improvements of accuracy, speed and cost reduction, but also towards a higher performance by more flexibility, better integration to the application, more reliability, and improved information quality. All these properties are decisive for efficient implementation of digitization based on real and reliable process data in the diverse sectors.

Sensors in Health

Sensors are everywhere and health is not an exception. In this talk, a few relevant aspects of sensing in health will be highlighted. It will go from the characteristics of signals present in this field, going through relevant issues while acquiring biomedical signals, up to issues related with transmission and monitoring with wireless sensors. The presentation will show works on wearable sensors, implantable devices, wireless signal acquisition, and contactless sensing for neuronal applications.

Evolving the IoT into a Multidisciplinary Cyber-Physical System

The optimization of modern global systems applications, ranging from electrical energy usage or water monitoring and management, in a global context is strongly improved by the deployment of a CPS where many multiparameter sensing and actuators IoT nodes are positioned at several entry points inside this ecosystem (ranging from production, distribution and consumption points). The presentation will address an example of such type of smart systems, revealing the multidisciplinary engineering work needed for a Hetero-Integration of a nanoscale CMOS IC with carbon nanotubes and MEMS Sensors, for a water quality sensing system.

Blockchain Cross-Borders: The European Blockchain Services Infrastructure

Blockchain and distributed ledger technology are overcoming a period of exploration and use cases to become adopted by companies to solve real problems that require distributed trust. A significant area of application is logistics and its subarea of supply chain. This talk will present the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), a major European initiative that aims to support cross-border services. The initial focus of the EBSI is public services, but the objective is to expand it to private applications. Logistics and supply chain will be able to leverage the EBSI both in the medium and the long terms.
